A Day of Firsts…

Today has already been a sad but happy day, and a just plain freaky day of firsts! Wow.. and it’s only 10am!

Today was the boy’s first day of school for the 2011/2012 school year.

After a bit of being worked up about a new year, and a new teacher  from the older more sensitive one yesterday… this morning went really well!!!  Well… minus Aidan’s break down about the shirt he was wearing.  He picked it and NEEDED it… but today said it was too big, sigh,  I knew that would be an issue at purchase when he tried it on.  I guess that is the price he pays for buying a shirt for the colour when the size wasn’t right 😛 

Off they go!

Hubby made pancakes for the kiddos and him, and I had a smoothie instead.  I had a personal sad day stepping on the scale after almost a month of not… I am up, A LOT!  I guess back to the grind I go… re-losing the poundage I already did… then hopefully one day even more 😛 A girl can dream…

When we came home last night from holidays we found our barn cat had had kittens… 7 of them!  Sigh!  How do they get pregnant so quick?!? …and does anyone want a kitten?


My most exciting part of my morning was when we checked on the chickens.  When going in the coop I saw there were some eggs in there!  Our first eggs from our chickens.  So far it is just the Ameruacanas laying, which is pretty cool as they are a pretty light greeny-blue.

When we talked to my SIL and she said she had seen about half a dozen in there I went back with a bucket to dig and inspect for others so they don’t go bad.  On my way to the coop I was headed off by three roosters who had been let out this morning to free-range.  When I had continued to go towards the coop the black one we had decided to keep when we whittled down the numbers this fall decided to run after me!!!  I am sure it was a sight!  I was running and screaming for my hubby as it came after me… usually they are just curious… not chasing!  I threw my bucket in it’s direction and it didn’t slow down… and kept on coming… 5 kicks in its direction and it wasn’t scared.  My hubby couldn’t hear me from the house, and finally after connecting with the rooster with my foot a few times (not hard… and he was going to attack me so all you PETA people back off) he started to back off.  Between the beak and his spurs I was SO scared!  My throat is raw, and my heart was pounding.  Finally Picky Hubby came out thinking maybe something was attacking the chickens…. not the chickens attacking me!

Needless to say that isn’t the rooster we are keeping… we are too chicken to butcher so I am not sure how we are going to thin them down.  Wish us luck!

Here is the smoothie in a bowl that helped soothe my raw throat!

In the mix:

  • 2 cups of Organic Baby Spinach
  • 1/4 c chocolate almond milk
  • 1c frozen summer fruit mix
  • 1 scoop choc. protein powder (promisil)
  • 1t chia seeds
  • Davinci sugar-free chocolate syrup
  • 1-2 c of ice
I added some Puffed cocoa quinoa on top… it was delicious!

I was a little afraid of the roosters on the bowl... ;)

Now to try and get caught up from holiday absence, and get a workout in at some point… or does a rooster sprint count?

The sun finally came out! Yay! I was able to bring my new camera out of the safety of the house, and my car to take some photos.

The first land mass is by where we ate lunch the other day...

I spent most of the day sadly inside waiting for my sister to come over so we could go out and explore… I should have phoned her when she didn’t show up, as she fell asleep!!  Err…

Supper was some Thai Halibut, Bruchetta mixture with some of the organic tortillas from Costco, and some greek veggie pizza.

My Uncle makes a mean Thai flavoured Halibut, I am going to have to get the recipe!! (Don’t worry I will share it with you…)

Tonights smorgasborg of food was due to the fact my cousin who is a hairstylist for Aveda was doing hair at my Mom’s… Making everyone Pretty for the wedding on the weekend :)

Funny… he doesn’t sit that still for me, OR that quiet!

Tonight is Sister Night!!  I am off to go spend the night at my sister’s.

We got rid of the hubby and kids, and her BF, Whoo Hoo!  I’m hoping now that we have some gum-tex we will get the fondant flower mess straightened out, and finally get some progress on this cake.  Hopefully the lack of rain finally will help the crazy humidity here!  (side note: my dry skin has never looked this healthy!)

Stylists, Smoothies and Starbucks, Oh My!

So True, yet feels like a disclaimer…

Yay, I survived the Hairdresser!  It actually went really well… thankfully!  After the last appointment with her replacement, and subsequent appointment to try and fix the mess with another one at the same salon, she still saw the awful cut.  At least I know it wasn’t in my head!  

So I am sporting some non-spotted highlights, and a reddish base again, whoo hoo!  …and significantly less split ends.

Cocoa Quinoa Puffs :)

Cocoa Quinoa Cereal

I think I have found a new love!  When shopping in Sobey’s the other day while at hockey camp I came across an interesting sounding cereal.  Gogo Quinoa’s Puffed Cocoa Quinoa.  I was a little hesitant at the $7 price tag, but I figured it would be a smoothie topper and not a bowl filler, so I took the plunge.  I am SO glad I did!  It is amazing. With only 3 ingredients, its a  CLEAN PICK!

Sheena, The Casual Baker, writes of the Puffed Wheat Square and how it seems to be only known to those in the prairie Provinces of Canada.  As someone who hailed from BC I can attest that I NEVER heard of this square till marrying my husband, but quickly found I liked it when I finally tried it!

I remember the first time I was requested to bring puffed wheat squares to a school function, and I struggled to find a “good” recipe.  Then I struggled to make a square instead of a puffed wheat granola!  They still are not my favourite to make.  I am not sure what it is, but mine never want to stay together!

Now I can have the flavour without the hassle!  Thanks to the cereal… and today I did, on top of a Peanut Butter Cup Smoothie in a Bowl

In the Mix:

  • Spinach, couple handfuls
  • Apricot (fresh) Banana could be substituted :)
  • T of Oats
  • 1/2 t Cocoa
  • T Chia Seeds
  • Splash Almond Milk
  • T of PB2
  • Splash of Torani Sugar-free Chocolate Syrup
  • Pinch of Xanthan and Guar Gum
  • 1-2c ice
Topped with a little Cocoa Quinoa Cereal, it was like dessert for breakfast!

Hockey camp… Sigh! Early mornings, tired cranky kids, sleep deprived parents!
It is crazy that I plan on spending a week in an arena in the summer, but I love my son! …and he loves hockey. We don’t have dreams of him playing in the NHL, neither does he for the most part.

At least I brought a smoothie! Yum!

In the Bowl:

  • baby spinach and romaine
  • A handful of snow peas
  • half a beefsteak tomato
  • julienne slices carrots
  • a mini cucumber
  • M&M Meat Shops Bistro stuffed Chicken, Spinach & Ricotta (160cal)


Last night at aquafit the instructor changed it up and did intervals, with some plyometrics IN the water.  It was great, I could feel the burn, and had to work way more than normal, which is awesome, as that is why I go! (This however didn’t stop me from muttering under my breath about my “love” for her!) There was a midnight swim at the pool after the class, and since my kids played nicely at the playground while I did  my thing I promised I would let them stay for an hour.  I had tread water for probably an hour being the only adult in the pool. When a friend of mine showed up to watch her kids from the deck, so I got out happily and visited till 11:30. The kids were in their glory!  …swimming outside with their friends WAY past bedtime!

This morning I felt a like a smoothie but felt like I wanted to “eat” something so a smoothie in a bowl was in order :)  To help make the smoothie even thick and creamier I added a pinch of Guar and Xanthan gums…

Today’s flavour was Chocolate & Peanut butter with some PB Granola sprinkled on top!

In the vitamix:

  • couple handfuls of baby spinach
  • tbsp PB2 powder
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
  • 1 tsp chia seeds
  • 2 baby apricots
  • 1 1/2 tbsp greek plain yogurt
  • 1/2 tsp cocoa
  • 1 shot of Davinci Sugar-free Chocolate Syrup
  • pinch of guar and xanthan gum

cal 268g    carbs 21g    Fat 5g    Protein 36g    Fiber 10g

With the added PB granola (33 cal, and worth every single one of them!) It made it seem like an even better treat!


I have some running around to do today, and am going to prime the outside of the house where the new bay went in a few weeks ago, as it has finally been a couple days without some rain!  Have a great day!

Mocha Coconut Smoothie

Ever have a Venti Mocha Coconut Frappaccino Light? The are amazing, but oh not so good for you!  Here is my twist on the Coffee Chain’s beverage of MY choice!

In the mix:

  • handful of spinach
  • 2 T Greek 0% Yogurt
  • 1T shredded unsweetened coconut
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
  • 1/2 t cocoa
  • expresso powder and/or small shot of strong coffee
  • 1 scoop chia seeds (optional)
  • 1 shot Davinci Sugar-free Coconut syrup
  • 1-2 cup ice

Blend till smooth, and YUM!

Must Clean House, Must Clean House…



I figure if I chant it enough times, it will happen, right?

Today I started off with a Green Peanut Butter and Chocolate Expresso Smoothie…. it is like dessert in a cup!I am going to have to make some with some gums sometime and make it into ice cream!

In the Vitamix:

  • 2 large handfuls of Spinach
  • 125ml Silk True Almond Milk
  • 1 scoop Chia Seeds
  • 1/2 tsp cocoa powder
  • 1 scoop Chocolate Protein Powder North Coast Naturals
  • 1tbsp PB2
  • 2 c ice cubes

It was So ooo… Good!

Today’s agenda is to clean, I have been vacant from cleaning lately, yes I do my dishes and laundry and bathroom, but my floors need scrubbed, my windows need washed, my furniture needs dusted…

I might take the kiddos in swimming this afternoon if I make some headway before… so I better go!

Mmmm…. Smoothie!


Smoothies are the perfect thing for Breakfast for me most mornings! Especially in the summer!  Cool, and refreshing and I get in some greens and fruits in first thing!

None of my smoothies are ever identical, but this is a common themed one I make when I need a little pick-me-up! Green Mocha Chia Seed Smoothie.:)

In the mix

  • Handful of Spinach
  • Shot of Expresso made in Keurig
  • Scoop North Coast Naturals Chocolate Protein powder
  • cup of Europe’s Best Frozen Fruit
  • 1 scoop ChiaNutra Organic Chia Seeds (Webber)
  • 1oz Davinci Sugar-free Chocolate syrup
  • 1-2c Ice
